5 Steps Toward Getting A Washington, D.C. Salesperson License

Getting your Washington, D.C. real estate license might seem daunting, but we’re here to guide you through the process.

How to Become a Real Estate Agent in Washington, D.C.

Requirements:

  • You must first be able to read, write, and understand the English language.

  • You must be a high school graduate or the holder of a high school equivalency certificate

  • You must not have had a real estate application denied within the last year, other than failure to pass the required examination.

  • You must not have had a real estate license suspended or revoked in D.C. or elsewhere.

Complete 60 hours of approved Pre-Licensing education.

Pass the course final exam.

After you complete all the course materials, meet the minimum time requirement, and pass the practice exam, there is a course final exam. The minimum passing score is 75%.

Pass the D.C. Real Estate Salesperson Exam.

Next, you must take and pass the D.C. licensing exam, which is administered by PSI. The National portion of this exam consists of 80 questions and a 120-minute time allowance and the State portion consists of 30 questions and a 90-minute time allowance. Select a sponsoring broker.

After passing your licensing exam, you must become associated with a current and active sponsoring broker. This broker will be a career and education mentor providing you with an inside view into the day-to-day operations of a real estate agent.

Here are some questions to consider when searching for the right broker:

  • What is their reputation, both locally and nationally?

  • What kind of real estate agents are they looking for?

  • Are they technologically advanced and up-to-date with the latest systems?

  • How do they support their agents with education and training?

  • What kind of commission structure do they offer?

  • Do they offer benefits?

  • Do they provide their agents with leads and marketing material?

  • Is there room to grow with the brokerage?

Complete the application for licensure.
