How to Become a Real Estate Agent in Kansas

Requirements:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.

  • You must hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.

1

Complete 60 Hours of approved Pre-Licensing education

Successfully complete an approved 60 clock-hour Pre-Licensing course with 30 hours of principles of real estate and 30 hours of Kansas practice courses. Learn more about your package options here.

You must register for a temporary PL number upon registration of the course. Students will also be required to submit fingerprints, application fee, and background fee at this time. You may do this by creating an account on KREC's Citizen Access portal.

2

Pass the course final exam.

After you complete all the course materials, meet the minimum time requirement, and pass the practice exam, you must pass a course final exam. The minimum passing score is 90%.

3

Pass the Kansas Real Estate Examination

Pearson VUE administers the Kansas real estate licensing exam. This 140-question test is comprised of two portions, covering both general and state requirements.

You will have 4 hours to complete the exam, 2.5 hours for the national portion and 1.5 hours for the Kansas portion. For more information, see the Pearson VUE candidate exam information here.

4

Select a sponsoring broker.

After passing your licensing exam, you must become associated with a current and active sponsoring broker. This broker will be a career and education mentor providing you with an inside view into the day-to-day operations of a real estate agent.

Here are some questions to consider when searching for the right broker:

  • What is their reputation, both locally and nationally?

  • What kind of real estate agents are they looking for?

  • Are they technologically advanced and up-to-date with the latest systems?

  • How do they support their agents with education and training?

  • What kind of commission structure do they offer?

  • Do they offer benefits?

  • Do they provide their agents with leads and marketing material?

  • Is there room to grow with the brokerage?

5

Complete your real estate license application.

Once you have passed the exam, submit the License Application documents provided by Pearson Vue to KREC along with your certificates of completion for the pre-license education, payment of any and all fees, and if applicable, a Nonresident Form and Certification of License History from any state you are currently or formerly licensed in. See the KREK real estate commission website for all up-to-date information.
