8 Steps Toward Getting A Louisiana Salesperson License

Getting your Louisiana real estate license might seem daunting, but we’re here to guide you through the process.

Complete 90 hours of approved Pre-Licensing education.

To start, you need to successfully complete an approved 90 clock-hour Pre-Licensing course. Learn more about your package options here.

Pass the course final exam.

After you have completed all your course materials, meet the minimum time requirement, and pass the practice exam; there is a course final exam. The minimum passing score is 75%.

Fill out Salesperson License Application Part A

You will need to fill out the form Salesperson License Application Part A. Once you turn in the completed application part A, your pre-licensing certification of completion, and submit the required fee to LREC; you will receive your candidate authorization to test from LREC.

Pass the Louisiana Real Estate Examination.

Once your Salesperson License Application Part A has been processed by LREC, you will receive an email communication with your candidate authorization to test from LREC via Pearson Vue with instructions to schedule your exam date/time.

You will have 150 minutes to complete the national portion and 90 minutes for the state portion. For more information, see the PearsonVue candidate exam information here.

Complete the Background Check

Next, you must submit a set of fingerprints and a criminal history background check to the LREC. The process will be slightly different depending on whether or not you have an in-state application or out-of-state application.

Acquire Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance.

You must have Errors and Omissions insurance policy in place before obtaining an active license. For more information, click here.

Complete the application.

Fill out the Initial Real Estate License Application - Part B and send with your proof/payment of your Errors and Omissions Insurance coverage to LREC.

Select a sponsoring broker.

After passing your licensing exam, you must become associated with a current and active sponsoring broker. This broker will be a career and education mentor providing you with an inside view into the day-to-day operations of a real estate agent.

Here are some questions to consider when searching for the right broker:

  • What is their reputation, both locally and nationally?

  • What kind of real estate agents are they looking for?

  • Are they technologically advanced and up-to-date with the latest systems?

  • How do they support their agents with education and training?

  • What kind of commission structure do they offer?

  • Do they offer benefits?

  • Do they provide their agents with leads and marketing material?

  • Is there room to grow with the brokerage?
