Maine Sales Agent Reciprocity Requirements

The Maine Real Estate Commission does not offer formal licensing reciprocity. However, if you’re a real estate agent licensed in another state and wish also have a real estate license in Maine, you won’t need to take additional Pre-Licensing courses. In this guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know, as well as all of the forms, requirements, and applications you’ll need to transfer your license to Maine with ease.

Maine Requires That All Applicants:

  • Register for and pass the state portion on the Maine real estate exam

  • Show proof that you hold a license in a state with requirements that are equivalent to Maine

  • Provide a Certificate of Licensure from each state you hold a license in

  • Apply for the Maine real estate sales agent license and pay all applicable fees

Maine License Portability and Reciprocity

Reciprocity: None

Maine does not offer reciprocity, but you can use your skills and experience to get ahead in the licensing process through the following steps:

  1. You must demonstrate knowledge of Maine real estate law by passing the Maine Law examination.

  2. You must hold a similar active license in good standing in your resident state (Maine Associate Broker is equivalent to a Salesperson in other states).

  3. Provide a Certificate of Licensure from each state in which you now hold or have held a real estate license (less than 30 days old when received by Commission).

  4. Submit a fully completed license application including a Certificate of Licensure from each state as noted above.

  5. Submit the appropriate license fee.

Steps & Forms for Getting Your Maine Non-Resident License

One of the biggest hang-ups in the Maine licensing process is not being prepared. If you’re knowledgeable about the out-of-state licensing process, you’ll get licensed much faster. We’ve assembled a handy list of documents and helpful tips that you’ll need when applying.

  • Complete the Maine Real Estate License Application. Select “Apply For A New License,” choose the appropriate license type. You will pay an application fee of $100. This must be submitted with the application.

  • Be aware that a non-resident sales agent license holds the same status as a Maine Associate Broker license. To obtain the Associate Broker license, you must submit your application within one year of successfully completing the Maine Law Exam.

  • Read the Maine Real Estate Candidate Handbook.

  • Find a sponsoring broker in order to get licensed.

  • Pass the Maine Law examination administered by Pearson VUE. All candidates qualifying by reciprocity must pass this examination regardless of the level of license currently held.

  • Have a record of your education history for proof of completion. This applies to previous licensing and/or college education if necessary. You’ll include this in your application.

  • You’ll need to complete a criminal records check and pay a $21 fee.

  • Include the certificate of licensure from every state you are licensed in with your application packet.

  • Your application must be filed within one year of passing the state exam.
