State Requirements

This course provides four hours of instruction in California federal and state laws and regulations, which satisfies a portion of the continued education needed for licensure in the state. Topics include The Appraisal Foundation, FIRREA, and federal laws. Then the course dives into the Appraisal Subcommittee, the establishment of the Appraisal Foundation, and the role of the Appraiser Qualifications Board and Appraisal Standards Board within the appraisal industry. The course culminates with in depth coverage of how California licenses and regulates appraisers through the duties of the California Bureau of Real Estate Appraisers (BREA), Bureau of Real Estate Appraisers Practice Act, and California Code of Regulations.

California State Requirement Details for Appraiser Continuing Education

Renewal Date: 4 years from the date of issuance (USPAP is required every 2 years)

Hours Required by the State for renewals prior to January 1, 2026: 56 Hours

  • 7-hour USPAP Update Course (required every 2 years)
  • 4-hour Federal and State Laws and Regulation Course
  • 2-hours of Elimination of Bias
  • 1-hour of Cultural Competency
  • 42 hours of approved continuing education

Hours Required by the State for renewals on or after January 1, 2026: 56 Hours

  • 7-Hour National USPAP Continuing Education Course (required every 2 years)
  • 7-hour Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course or 4-hour Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course (see explanation below) 
  • 4-hour Federal and State Laws and Regulation Course
  • 1-hour of Cultural Competency
  • 34-37 hours of approved continuing education (see explanation below)

Beginning January 1, 2026, a Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course will be required for Continuing Education. The first time a Licensee completes the Continuing Education requirement for this course, the course length must be 7 hours. If a Licensee successfully completed an 8-hour course as part of their Qualifying Education, they have satisfied this requirement. Every 2 calendar years thereafter, the course length must be at least 4 hours. This new course requirement is included in the 28 total hours for a 2-year renewal.

Reporting: The state does not require schools to report course completions.

Certificates: Immediately upon appraisal course completions, The CE Shop will provide students with an electronic copy of the course certificate of completion. Certificates will remain in your account for a minimum of five years, should you need additional copies at a later time. Please refer to your renewal application to determine if you need to submit your certificate(s) of completion with your renewal. Course completion dates are recorded using Central Standard Time. Please note that the date on your certificate of completion will reflect this.
