State Requirements

The 7-Hour National USPAP Continuing Education Course focuses on the requirements for ethical behavior and competent performance by appraisers that are set forth in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). All required manuals from The Appraisal Foundation are included in your course.

This course is offered via live online (synchronous meeting) delivery. Once enrolled, you can select upcoming classes to attend. Classes are offered weekly in two 3.5-hour sessions (Part A and Part B). They must be taken in order, but you can select the schedule options that work best for you. No need to register in advance, just show up! Upcoming classes are:

Iowa State Requirement Details for Appraiser Continuing Education

Renewal Date: 6/30 every even-numbered year

Hours Required by the State for renewals prior to January 1, 2026: 28 Hours

  • 7-Hour National USPAP Update Course
  • 21 hours of approved continuing education

Hours Required by the State for renewals on or after January 1, 2026: 28 Hours

  • 7-Hour National USPAP Continuing Education Course
  • 7-hour Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course or 4-hour Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course (see explanation below) 
  • 14 hours of approved continuing education or 17 hours of approved continuing education (see explanation below)

Beginning January 1, 2026, a Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course will be required for Continuing Education. The first time a Licensee completes the Continuing Education requirement for this course, the course length must be 7 hours. If a Licensee successfully completed an 8-hour course as part of their Qualifying Education, they have satisfied this requirement. Every 2 calendar years thereafter, the course length must be at least 4 hours. This new course requirement is included in the 28 total hours for a 2-year renewal.

An applicant seeking to renew an initial license issued less than 185 days prior to renewal is not obligated to report any continuing education. An applicant seeking to renew an initial certificate or registration issued for 185 days to 365 days prior to renewal has to demonstrate completion of at least 14 credit hours, including the National USPAP continuing education course or its AQB equivalent. An applicant seeking to renew an initial certificate or registration issued 365 days prior to renewal or more has to demonstrate completion of at least 28 credit hours, including seven credit hours of the most recent National USPAP continuing education.

Reporting: The state does not require schools to report course completions.

Expiration Date of Course: Course expiration dates vary by course. Each individual course will have an expiration date listed in your account. See Terms & Conditions for more details.

Certificates: Immediately upon appraisal course completions, The CE Shop will provide students with an electronic copy of the course certificate of completion. Certificates will remain in your account for a minimum of five years, should you need additional copies at a later time. Please refer to your renewal application to determine if you need to submit your certificate(s) of completion with your renewal. Course completion dates are recorded using Central Standard Time. Please note that the date on your certificate of completion will reflect this.

Max Hours in a 24-Hour Period: Licensees will not receive credit for more than 8 hours of continuing education in a 24-hour period. Our online course delivery system manages this requirement for you.
