State Requirements

This course provides 2 hours of instruction in New Jersey appraisal laws and rules, which satisfies a portion of the continued education needed for licensure in the state. Topics include The Appraisal Foundation, FIRREA, and federal components to set up the state specific subjects. Then the course dives into the Appraisal Subcommittee, the establishment of the Appraisal Foundation, and the role of the Appraiser Qualifications Board and Appraisal Standards Board in congress with New Jersey requirements. The course wraps up with New Jersey State Board of Real Estate Appraisers’ role and purpose along with the state’s appraisal legislation.

New Jersey State Requirement Details for Trainee and Licensed and Certified Appraiser Continuing Education

Renewal Date: Licenses and certifications are valid for a two-year period and must be renewed by December 31st of every odd-numbered year. Trainee permits are valid for a period of one year. Trainee permits may be renewed a maximum total of three times. 

Hours Required by the State for Trainee Appraisers: 14 Hours (every year)

Note: Trainee Appraisers must successfully complete the 7-hour National USPAP Update Course, or its AQB-approved equivalent, every 2 calendar years.  Additionally, a 2-hour course on New Jersey law and rules governing the practice of real estate appraising must be completed every two calendar years. Beginning January 1, 2026, a Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course will be required for renewal (see explanation below).

Hours Required by the State for Licensed and Certified Appraisers for renewals prior to January 1, 202628 Hours (every two years)

  • 2-hour course on New Jersey law and rules governing the practice of real estate appraising
  • 7-hour USPAP Update Course
  • 19 hours of approved continuing education

Hours Required by the State for Licensed and Certified Appraisers for renewals on or after January 1, 202628 Hours (every two years)

  • 2-hour course on New Jersey law and rules governing the practice of real estate appraising
  • 7-hour National USPAP Continuing Education Course
  • 7-hour Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course or 4-hour Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course (see explanation below)
  • 12 hours of approved continuing education or 15 hours of approved continuing education (see explanation below)

Beginning January 1, 2026, a Valuation Bias and Fair Housing Laws and Regulations course will be required for Continuing Education. The first time a Licensee completes the Continuing Education requirement for this course, the course length must be 7 hours. If a Licensee successfully completed an 8-hour course as part of their Qualifying Education, they have satisfied this requirement. Every 2 calendar years thereafter, the course length must be at least 4 hours.  This new course requirement is included in the 28 total hours for a 2-year renewal.

Reporting: The state does not require schools to report course completions.

Expiration Date of Course: Course expiration dates vary by course. Each individual course will have an expiration date listed in your account. See Terms & Conditions for more details.

Certificates: Immediately upon course completions, The CE Shop will provide students with an electronic copy of the course certificate of completion. Certificates will remain in your account for a minimum of five years, should you need additional copies at a later time. Please refer to your application to determine if you need to submit your certificate(s) of completion. Course completion dates are recorded using Central Standard Time. Please note that the date on your certificate of completion will reflect this.
