Per the Virginia Real Estate Board Licensing Regulations for DPOR, the following qualifications must be met to get your Virginia real estate license:

• Applicant shall have a good reputation for honesty, truthfulness, and fair dealing

• Must complete the 60 hours of required education and pass both the course final exam and the state licensing exam

• You must be in good standing as a license real estate agent in every jurisdiction where otherwise licensed

• Submit to fingerprinting and disclose any misdemeanors or convicted felonies

• Be at least 18 years of age

• Hold a high school diploma or equivalent

In order to qualify to sit for the Virginia real estate licensing exam, each student must complete 60 hours covering the principles of real estate. These 60 hours can be completed online or in a classroom. The CE Shop is an approved education provider with the online 60-hour Principles and Practices of Real Estate for Salespersons Course.

The time it takes to get a Virginia real estate salesperson license can vary. It may take up to a few months to complete the required 60-hour Pre-Licensing coursework, find a sponsoring broker, go through the application process, and take the Virginia Real Estate Salesperson examination.

In order to get your real estate license in Virginia, the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) requires that you must be at least 18 years old.

The state application fee for a Virginia real estate salesperson is $210 and $265 for qualifying broker candidates. The exam fee is around $60, paid to PSI who administers the exam. Pre-Licensing coursework tuition varies from around $300 to $700 depending on the course package and school.

A real estate broker holds a license on behalf of a brokerage, and is directly responsible for the supervision and conduct of the brokerage business. A real estate salesperson, on the other hand, is supervised by and works directly for the representative broker.

After 36 months of experience as an active real estate salesperson in Virginia you can apply to become a real estate broker in the state. In addition, you must complete the required 180 hours of course work and pass the state and national portions of the Real Estate Broker examination.

Virginia residents can get their real estate license online as long as the education provider is approved by the Virginia Real Estate Board.

When a real estate agent applicant discloses their criminal history, the Virginia Real Estate Board will review the nature of the crimes and make a decision regarding if the agent may receive a license. Violent crimes and fraud are more likely to negatively impact the board's decision but are not disqualifying.

In order to become a licensed real estate agent in Virginia, candidates must have at least a high school diploma or GED.

During a Virginia agent's first active renewal, they are required to take 36 hours of Post-Licensing education. Virginia salespersons are required to complete 16 hours of Continuing Education every two years.

Virginia has no formal agreements for reciprocity with other states. However, out-of-state agents with equivalent licensing can typically waive the education portion of the Virginia requirements. Agents will need to apply for this waiver and complete other administrative tasks like submitting to a background check and paying the related application fees.
